Let's Learn English for Fun

Learning English will be very easy if know how to begin. I recommend that we begin from English parts of speech. There are eight of them.

  • noun

  • verb
  • adjective
  • adverb
  • pronoun
  • preposition
  • conjunction
  • interjection
We will explore these parts of speech one by one. Don't get tense. I know it's never easy to start a new thing.

a. noun

A noun is a word used to name a person, animal, place, thing, or abstract concepts. A noun can function in a sentence as a person, place, thing, quality, concept, and action.

Persons

Places

Things

beauty
truth
knowledge
happiness

walking/to walk
typing/to type
writing/to write
thinking/to think

b. verb

A verb is a word that tells what the subject of the sentence does, says, thinks, or feels. Sometimes the verb shows movement (jump) or sometimes it shows how a thing is or that it exists (is). The verb also shows time which is called tense. The form of the verb or its tense can tell when events take place.

Examples :

  • My teacher showed us how to write an essay. (does)
  • Maria talked to her mom about her new room-mate. (says)
  • Jose thought he could answer all the questions, but he couldn't. (thinks)
  • I felt the air so cold tonight. (feels)
  • The kids ran as if they had been chased by a dog. (movement)
  • Ice is cold. (is)/(exists)

c. Adjective

Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence. Adjectives come before nouns.

Examples :

the tall professor
the lugubrious lieutenant
a solid commitment
a month's pay
a six-year-old child
the unhappiest, richest man
